Nikola Tanev – “Flowers” , 1929

The painting “Flowers” by Nikola Tanev is the highlight of the month of March in Djurkovi Gallery.

Taneff’s strength lies in the open – hearted candour of his paintings, in the exaltation at the motif found, instantly grasped and vividly transposed onto the canvas.

I started painting early in the morning and finished late in the evening. I didn’t know what a rest was. I plundered, pouring my enthusiastic soul onto the canvas. I never had enough of the day. From dark daybreak I was already looking forward to dawn. The night had become an obstacle in my life. I lived feverishly, enthusiastically, not to say painfully. The sun was driving me crazy. My whole being was constantly excited at work. Something was driving me madly to paint. I did not feel heat, hunger and thirst. I stood to exhaustion…
